Capturing audio, outside of an acoustically-controlled recording studio, can be very problematic. Even the best, and most expensive mics, are susceptible to picking up unwanted and undesirable sounds within it's environment. Unlike recording in a recording studio, on-location sound environments are far less controllable, and can negatively affect the quality of captured audio.

Common issues include:

• Wind blowing into the mic that's capturing audio.​

• Ruffle from a lavalier mic in contact with a speaker's clothing.

• Unwanted sounds from the environment, such as cars, plane, people, machinery, indoor/outdoor appliances, and other environmental sounds.

• Obsessive reverberation and/or bad acoustics from a non-acoustically treated room.

• Hum/Hiss from an air conditioner/heater, ceiling/floor fan, computer, refrigerator, and etc.

• Audio clipping/distortion from an audio signal, that reaches the input limits of the recording device.
